Microsoft has released update KB5040442 for Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2. This update includes several new features, bug fixes, and tips and recommendations, including some for Microsoft Game Pass. We’ll keep you updated on any future changes or additional features.
Taskbar and File Management Improvements
Windows 11 brings back the Show Desktop button, which was hidden by default when the company released the Copilot update. You can now configure this button in the “Taskbar Settings” section.
It is now possible to create 7-Zip and Tape Archive (TAR) files using the context menu. To do this, right-click on the file, select the “Compress to” tab, and then choose the desired option, including gzip and bzip2. The new Additional Options file compression wizard will help you select the desired format and add necessary details, customizing the compression levels and types of data stored in the archives.
File Explorer now displays a thin black border around selected files or folders for easier browsing. Additionally, a new Copy button has been added to the Windows Sharing window to simplify copying files.
New Features and Bug Fixes
The developers have introduced a new account manager feature in the Start menu, allowing you to quickly view the benefits of your Microsoft account and manage its settings more easily. Copilot is now pinned to the taskbar and behaves like a regular app, allowing you to resize, move, and dock the window. This feature is rolling out gradually and will initially be available on new Windows 11 PCs and new Copilot+ PCs.
Finally, the update fixes several bugs, including issues with the touch keyboard, Snipping Tool, and the Safely Remove Hardware functionality, adds NIX Solutions.
The KB5040442 update for Windows 11 is installed automatically. You can also check its availability in the “Windows Update” section.
