Google has launched a new AI-powered feature called Simplify, designed to help iPhone users better understand complex terminology on the web. The feature is now rolling out in the iOS Google app and offers a more accessible way to read professional or technical language without the need to navigate away from the current page.
Simplify enables users to convert selected text into more understandable language directly within the Google app. Built on the Gemini AI model, the feature is focused on making specialized vocabulary—often found in scientific, medical, or legal texts—more accessible to a broader audience. This is particularly useful when reading dense materials such as academic papers or formal reports.
According to The Verge, Google has stated that Simplify can interpret complex terms without distorting their meaning. For instance, the medical term “emphysema” is simplified to “a condition in which the air sacs in the lungs are damaged,” and “fibrosis” becomes “a thickening of connective tissue or scarring that occurs in response to injury.” These interpretations help users grasp the essential meaning without oversimplification.
How It Works and What to Expect
Activating the feature is straightforward: users can highlight any section of text in a web page viewed through the Google app on iOS and tap the Simplify icon that appears. The selected content is then instantly transformed into more digestible language, making the reading experience smoother and more inclusive.
During internal testing, Google found that users rated the simplified versions as significantly more useful than the original content, adds NIX Solutions. While the tool is currently only available on iOS, interest in its potential availability on other platforms is growing. When asked about a possible release for Android or Chrome, Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz told The Verge, “We’re not talking about that yet, but we’re always looking to implement useful features in our other products.”
We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available, especially for those hoping to see the feature on additional devices or browsers. As Google continues to develop AI-driven solutions, Simplify marks a meaningful step toward making digital information easier to understand for everyone.
