NIX Solutions: Google Maps Adds AI-Powered Q&A

Google continues integrating its large language model, Gemini, into various services, including mapping. While Gemini’s capabilities are promising, users can truly appreciate them only by trying them firsthand. One of the latest additions is a new feature in Google Maps that enables AI-powered location-based queries.

The “Ask About Place” Button

A large-scale rollout has begun for the “Ask about place” button, as noted by Android Authority. However, the feature is appearing gradually, with variations in availability and functionality. Users can access it by selecting specific locations in Google Maps, allowing them to ask Gemini questions about those places, such as how to reach a destination. The AI processes requests using mapping service URLs to provide relevant information.

The button appears for most locations but is unavailable when viewing broader areas like entire cities or regions. In some cases, Gemini may respond that it cannot process mapping queries, and certain requests may require a paid Gemini Advanced subscription.

It appears Google has begun deploying the feature widely without an official announcement or fully refining its functionality, notes NIX Solutions. Future updates will likely improve its operation and availability. Yet, we’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
