NIX Solutions: Google’s Discontinued Products in 2024

As we move toward 2025, it’s time to reflect on the past year in technology. 2024 has already seen significant reviews of popular services like YouTube Music, YouTube on TVs, Spotify Wrapped, Apple Music Replay, and Google Photos. Yet, it’s also been marked by major tech scandals and notable changes, particularly from Microsoft with updates to Windows 10 and 11.

In the tech world, Google has always been at the forefront, introducing new products while also discontinuing others. 2024 was no different. Let’s take a closer look at 10 services and products Google stopped supporting this year.

Major Discontinuations in Google’s 2024 Lineup

Chromecast

The Chromecast device, a beloved streaming gadget since its debut in 2013, has officially been retired. Originally priced at $35, it turned any TV with an HDMI port into a smart TV, without needing any additional apps. Chromecast used Google Cast technology to stream content from a phone or tablet. Its legacy has been replaced by the new Google TV Streamer.

Google Jamboard

Introduced in 2017, Google Jamboard was a 55-inch “digital collaborative flipchart” aimed at competing with the Microsoft Surface Hub. With a price tag of $4,999, it supported G Suite and catered to business environments. However, Google stopped releasing updates for Jamboard in September 2024 and will completely shut down the service by December 31.

Google Podcasts

Launched in 2018, Google Podcasts has now been shut down as users have gravitated towards YouTube for their podcast needs. The platform’s podcasting functionality has been moved to YouTube Music, allowing users to transfer subscriptions or export their data in OPML format.

Pixel Devices

Google has discontinued the original Pixel Fold and older Pixel 7 and 7 Pro models. These have now been replaced by the improved Pixel 9 Pro Fold. However, Google assures users that OS updates will continue for previously released devices, keeping them up to date for the foreseeable future.

Additional Service Closures and Shifts

Stack (PDF Scanner)

Stack, an app developed by Google’s Area 120 incubator for scanning and converting documents into PDFs, was discontinued in September 2024 due to low popularity.

Google Play Movies & TV

In January 2024, Google Play Movies & TV was shut down. Now, users can only purchase and rent movies through Google TV and YouTube apps.

Gmail Basic HTML View

Google also ended support for the Basic HTML version of Gmail, automatically transitioning users to the standard interface for a more consistent experience.

VPN by Google One

Due to low demand, Google One’s VPN service has been discontinued. However, some of its features are now integrated into Pixel devices.

Keen

The experimental platform Keen, created by Google’s Area 120, was discontinued in March 2024. The service allowed users to curate collections of content but could not compete with platforms like Pinterest.

Dropcam

Dropcam’s Wi-Fi cameras, acquired by Google in 2014, were discontinued in April 2024. They’ve been replaced by the more advanced Nest Cam cameras.

While each of these projects had unique features and purposes, their closure reflects Google’s broader strategy of streamlining its efforts, adds NIX Solutions. By discontinuing less popular services and devices, the company is focusing its resources on more promising products and innovations. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
