Apple has released iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, bringing a range of new features for both iPhone and iPad users. A major highlight for iOS is its support for the RCS protocol in messaging, which allows users to share high-resolution photos and videos with Android devices. On the iPad front, the long-awaited Calculator app is finally available.
Messaging Upgrades and RCS Support
The RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging protocol introduces more advanced features compared to traditional SMS. With this update, iPhone users can exchange high-quality media with Android users while still seeing the green bubble indicating messages from Android devices. New iMessage features include text effects, formatting options, message scheduling, and satellite messaging capabilities. These updates enhance communication across platforms, ensuring a smoother user experience. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments.
Enhanced Customization and Smart Home Integration
iPhone users can now personalize their home screen with greater flexibility, adjusting the size, color, and placement of app icons and widgets. The lock screen also has more customization options, while the Photos app has undergone a significant design overhaul.
For smart home enthusiasts, the Home app now allows local control of Matter-compatible devices without needing a home hub. However, devices using the Thread network will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Guests can also access locks, gates, and alarms through the app, offering more convenience. A new feature for unlocking doors without taking out your phone is planned, though no Smart locks support this yet.
Future AI Features and iPadOS 18 Updates
Apple’s AI-based features will debut in iOS 18.1, expected in October as a public beta. These tools will assist with text manipulation, image generation via Image Playground, and enhance Siri interactions. Initially, Apple Intelligence will be available in the US, followed by select English-speaking countries. We’ll keep you updated as it expands globally.
In iPadOS 18, the Calculator app finally makes its debut after years of user requests. The “Notes” app also receives a significant upgrade, now capable of solving mathematical problems, including graphs and diagrams. Additional updates include home screen customization options, an updated tab bar, and a redesigned Control Center. Apple Intelligence features will arrive on iPad later this year, adds NIXSolutions.
To install iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, simply go to “Settings” > “General” > “Software Update” on your device and follow the instructions.
