NIXSOLUTIONS: Meta Unveils Aria Gen 2 Smart Glasses

Meta has introduced Aria Gen 2, an updated version of its experimental smart glasses designed for researchers in artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine perception. This new model builds on the original Aria Gen 1 glasses, which Meta (then Facebook) released in 2020.

Improved Features and Use Cases

Aria Gen 2 is equipped with a wide range of sensors that support various research applications. For instance, the startup Envision utilizes them to develop services that assist people with visual and hearing impairments in navigation. Compared to its predecessor, the new model includes a heart rate sensor, a more powerful processor for on-device processing, and an improved design for all-day comfort.

Meta continues to explore the potential of smart glasses as a mobile computing platform, similar to smartphones. The company has already launched Ray-Ban Meta glasses for $300, featuring an AI-powered voice assistant and camera functions. Additionally, in September, Meta unveiled a prototype of Orion augmented reality glasses.

Research Access and Future Availability

Meta is making Aria Gen 2 available to academic and commercial research labs as part of Project Aria, adds NIXSOLUTIONS. “By offering them for research, we aim to advance open studies and public understanding of key technologies that will shape the future of computing and AI,” the company stated. While there is no confirmed timeline for general public availability, researchers can request access to the latest updates. Yet, we’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.
